100% volunteer non-staffed department providing uninterrupted services since 1925. We respond to an average of 250 calls a year.
Our primary response area is Westmoreland City, Biddle, First St, Sandy Hill Rd, Altman Acres, Kingsbury and most of Altman farms and Buena Vista plans. We service other key areas and major business/retail of east side North Huntingdon as well.
Our department offers two types of memberships, active emergency responder and non-firefighting administrative support. No experience is needed for either membership.
Active emergency responder:
An emergency responder is anyone who responds to emergency incidents with the department. There are two categories of emergency responders, Senior firefighter and Junior firefighter. No experience is needed for either. A Senior firefighter is anyone above the age of 18. A Junior firefighter is anyone between the ages of 14 and 17. The department provides gear and training opportunities at no expense to the emergency responder!
Emergency responders have multiple paths they can follow at their comfort level. For example, a member can become an interior firefighter or they can become only a driver for the department vehicles. Any time and help a responder can contribute is always appreciated!
Support member:
These members are individuals who don’t want to perform firefighting tasks such as responding to emergency incidents but are willing to lend a hand when help is needed. Administrative support members can attend meetings or help out at work details. A few examples of a work detail are washing the fire department trucks, cleaning the building, or maintenance.
The 1st Monday of the month is our department meeting. generally, department trainings are scheduled every Monday of the month after the meeting and occasionally shift to other days of week. Monday trainings are usually during the evening hours after 6 pm. some trainings are certified courses through various colleges. certified courses are paid by the department, therefore they’re free to all members!
Certified courses can also be taken outside of our department Monday trainings. We’re 100% volunteer so members take courses around their schedule. It is not required to attend trainings but encouraged. for more information about trainings, contact us!
